i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster’s demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there’s a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.

im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board… like A Lot of shit is about to go down

we’re about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we’re about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.

WARNING TO NORTH CAROLINIANS

our chiggers now carry TYPHUS

The symptoms to look out for are fever, rash, headache, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, general GI symptoms and a crusty nasty looking area around the bite. Not all of these symptoms may be present but if you were bitten by a chigger in North Carolina and you don’t feel well, go to the doctor. Antibiotics can clear it right up but if left untreated, the fatality rate can be 40% for some strains.

Here’s a map of the places tested and the places where chiggers were found to be infected:

image

(Also, because I saw this in the notes, typhoid and typhus are radically different diseases. Typhoid is caused by salmonella and usually transferred through contaminated food and water while typhus is caused by several different bacteria and typically transferred by insect bite.)

Are you fucking kidding me

Warning for non North Carolinians. Stay off North Carolina beaches!

The beaches are the only part of the state that seems safe LMFAO

The common non colloquial term for chiggers is sandflea. You get bit by them from walking barefoot on beaches and sandy soil. That’s why I said stay off the beaches.

Oh I see! Common misconception. Sand fleas are a different animal than chiggers. Chiggers are a type of mite that live in damper areas like forest meadows and lawns.

sandfleas are jiggers. chiggers are a mite. sound similar, look different, different diseases, found in different areas

Glaze is out!

Tired of having your artwork used for AI training but find watermarks dismaying and ineffective?

Well check this out! Software that makes your Art look messed up to training AIs and unusable in a data set but nearly unchanged to human eyes.

I just learned about this. It’s in Beta. Please read all the information before using.

1/ This might be the most important oil painting I’ve made: Musa Victoriosa The first painting released to the world that utilizes Glaze, a protective tech against unethical AI/ML models, developed by the @UChicago team led by @ravenben. App out now 👇 https://t.co/cNIXNDHMBy pic.twitter.com/Y1MqVK7yvZ — Karla Ortiz 🐀 (@kortizart) March 15, 2023ALT

Art thieves already hate it:

image

Dude, if you’re stealing, you deserve to have the data poisoned. Because you could have asked and you didn’t.

The link is only in the original post inside an image, not as text, so here it is as plain text: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/

and the paper about how it works: https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.04222

As links (because some of us are on mobile and can’t easily copy and paste to our browser), those are:

https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu

&

A bit of a TLDR for some questions I saw in the notes:

The team that created Glaze is from the University of Chicago. Their names are each listed in full on the Glaze download website. (This group of students/professors did this for their SPRING BREAK 😱 so go give them some love lol)

It is free to download. No, they won’t ask for or raise money from/for this project.(stated by one of the lead professors of the project).

Glaze is designed to protect artists’ STYLE–which a bunch of ai people have been deliberately fine-tuning their models to mimic (and specifically of current living artists–small or big).

It currently does not protect against composition/trace-like theft (as seen when run through img-to-img) but that would be protected by copyright anyway while STYLE is not.

The University Team has stated that they are dedicated to continuing to improve the tool, like fixing bugs (like overheating older computers by taking up lots of energy when Glazing–it currently runs on CPU so they’re trying to change that to GPU, I believe) and expanding the type of protection given to artists (like working against img-to-img theft).

It currently only works directly on your computer (phones not advised due to current overheating issue, no tablets, or iPads, and no website runthrough since that would be insecure to breaches/scraping/hacks)

It currently works best on painterly artwork, but can still be used on other forms (team is working on improving this)

IT WORKS BY calculating the changes each image needs for the best protection against style theft by AI, and adds tiny changes throughout the piece, so that your style will, for example, confuse the ai into seeing van gogh. But the ai thieves will see a regular image in your style, feeding it into their model labeled as your work (thus starting the “data poisoning”).

Do not post the original unGlazed piece of your artwork after posting your Glazed version (obviously)

The Team worked directly with over 1,000 artists that were being impacted by the ai theft. Because the team listened to those artists, Glaze accounts for regular art thieves too (i.e. Glaze can’t be removed/cropped etc. like signatures or watermarks when reposted. It’s just part of the image, so even if it ends up on another site and scraped, the Glazing is still in effect)

When you run your artwork through Glaze, no information is sent back to the Team. (Aka, no scraping on their part. The app receives information from the Team (like updates) but no information from you is given to them through the app. Basically Team servers —> You and NOT Team servers <-–>You) One-way data street.

Brief misunderstanding happened over an open-source license for the front-end part of the app. (Used open-source coding for front-end, not knowing that code’s use-license states it is only for other open-source uses, not closed-source (the back-end code of the app is private to prevent counter-counter measure developments)). The Team took down the app until they replaced the front-end code with code written from scratch by the team. They are now not in violation of that open-source license since they are no longer using it. (you have 30 days to remedy a license breach once informed; they did so in 2)

The Team is currently in touch with Japanese artists to better expand the tool for use to protect their art styles

From what I understand of it, Glaze is an AI tool designed to be anti-AI (Think Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2: one Terminator robot vs. all the other Terminators 😂)

You can download it from their website and also contact them through email there with any questions, problems, or bugs. The website: https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/

your favorite youtubers and content creators are about to be offered some tantalizing tv/streaming deals so we’re all about to find out who the real working class allys are

someone’s gonna get cancelled doing this and they’re gonna cry crocodile tears over how difficult it is to make a living as a content creator and i’m telling you right now we are NOT going to buy it, got it? scabs deserve no sympathy

It is hard making a living being a quote unquote “content creator” still not an excuse to be a scab

This.

Trying to make a living from YouTube is like constantly running along the edge of a knife in clogs, it is incredibly stressful, it is mentally destructive and you do a truly obscene amount of work for genuinely very little compensation relative to the hours put in.

A big one-time payout from a streaming deal from some desperate studio jackoff could be life-changing, but it does not come for fucking free. The money they are offering you is money they have ripped directly from the hands and mouths of other creatives.

If you saw someone rip food out of someone else’s hands and then offer it to you, you wouldn’t fucking take it, would you? If you have a shred of decency you’ll tell the guy to give the fucking food back and go get fucked. And if you were the one getting food ripped out of your hands, you’d reasonably expect the people around you to have that same solidarity with you and not accept it.

The industry will try to abstract this as much as possible - they’re doing it in the press right now, “oh it’s just a bunch of rich, selfish Hollywood elites making a play for more money!” is EXPLICITLY an attempt to get you to see the union members as something other than your fellow workers - and they’ll try to pull shit like “oh the strike has nothing to do with you, you’re not a member of the union and you won’t see the benefits so why should you sacrifice this opportunity for them” and so on.

They’re trying to make the issue more distant and abstract, to alienate you from your fellow human beings. And in response we must make it closer and more concrete.

The money they offer to a scab is taken from the hands of a union member. They are offering you a union member’s student loan payments, their rent, their food budget, their kids’ college funds.

Do not take it. It is not and can never be worth it.

#tag edit. the article mostly talks abt concerns over delayed medical equipment which actually does suckALT

yes that’s how bourgeois media tries to trick workers into being against strikes. Any delays are solely due to United Parcels Service incorporated not properly paying their workers.

By not negotiating, the company - hand-in-hand with the bourgeois media trying to make that the sob story - are actually holding medical equipment for ransom.

If you’re concerned about medical equipment maybe UPS should stop forcing its preload to go faster than it is safe, leaving open packages all over the place because they say that slows us down, loading tractor trailers not only to the ceiling but to the point where you can’t even open them because they’re that packed in. UPS is causing this shit, not Teamsters, not the employees.

UPS has never respected things like medical equipment and your packages. They don’t care, it’s all the bottom line.

image
image
image
image

This is what the company thinks of everyone’s packages, these are all from average days. This is what the Teamsters want to prevent by making kig conditions materially better for us.

I was quite literally told to stop repairing and taping open boxes by a manager because when you stop unloading a trailer for even ten seconds it “hurts production”.

Actually, “important medical deliveries could be delayed by this” and “the workers should still do it because it’s their right and their need and they’re trying to make things better for everyone; the company is at fault for the delays” are entirely congruent messages!

Suggestion: if you need any meds refilled in the next [duration of the strike], see if there’s any way you can pick them up at the pharmacy instead—or get those orders in NOW, before the strike potentially starts, even if it’s a little early for a refill.

I am a BIG fan of all the workers fighting to unionize, fighting for better conditions and pay, striking, and standing in solidarity this summer.

May this rising sea work to lift all boats and, remember, don’t be a scab!

WGA, and as of this afternoon SAG-AFTRA, are getting attention (great!) but they are far from the only ones.
